This is an odd situation to say the least! I started a job 3 weeks ago. When I started, they told me that they hired me because they like the skills I have, but didn't really know how I would be used. Well I had accepted the job, knowing that I would be getting paid more than I have ever been paid. Well I have been there 3 weeks and they still haven't found much for me to do, I spend half of the day killing time. I have been doing a lot of reading, on documentation about the aircraft I work on.

I have talked to my boss, coworkers, everyone and I tell them how I need work to do. They give me something, I knock it out, and ask for more. Unfortunately it just takes them so long to find me anything. I feel like the issue will eventually get resolved...I am just getting tired of reading technical documentation while killing time!

Any suggestions? How would you handle this? I feel like I am almost becoming a nuicense as much as I ask for work.

Be creative in looking for work - if you have been given simple tasks with a spreadsheet, see if you can improve the flow of information or the analysis reported. In other words, look for ways to improve anything that you have a part in or do more than is asked. This typically involves understanding the process at a deeper level or by using (developing?) data analysis skills.

View this as an opportunity to work like someone that you would want to hire.

I felt the same way when I came back from Viet Nam. The Army gave me a wonderful education in communications. I went to work for Western Union. At first I was bored with my job, but then we launched the nations first domestic communications satellite. Everything went upword from then on. I worked for RCA, GE, and now I work for Sirius Satellite Radio. The boring times are just a part of the big picture. Chalk it up to experience.

If this job is not the career job u want or not in the insudtry u want....count it as a blessing and use the time to develop the skills u need for your career job. Makes sense?

I wouldn't worry about it yet. Be grateful that you're not being overworked. If in a few weeks more time you're still not doing anything then I would talk to your boss about it and say that you feel that you have useful skills which you're not being able to use.
