You can encrypt your network. Check your manual
on how to do it with your equipment. If there's a choice
between WEP,WPA and WPA2 chose the last one in
this list.

Enable encryption on your wireless router. WPA is preferable to WEP, but WEP is better than nothing. Read the docs to learn how to do that.

Someone is likely to post enabling MAC filtering. Don't waste your time. Bypassing MAC filtering is child's play. I can bypass a MAC filter in a few seconds, and lock you out of your connection at the same time!

Ditto for disabling SSID broadcasts. I can snag an SSID in 10 seconds and punch right into your wireless.

If you enable WEP encryption it might take me several days to crack it. If you enable WPA encryption, it will take me about 1200 YEARS to crack it.

well it depends on how secure you want to be.

WEP encryption-
this is a pretty good "defence" against unwanted computers gaining access to your computer. The idea is that the connection is unreadable by outside computers, because the signal is scrambled. here is the downside.... people with time would be able to listen to the packets sent accross the network and would be able to "crack" your wep key...

Brodcast strength-
the stronger and higher frequancy you brodcast (for example,.. the higher the channel) the farther your transmission will be sent. To keep the neighbors from accessing your internet connection, be sure to brodcast on lower channels, so that the signal will not roam too far from home.

Brodcast SSID-
dont... dont brodcast you ssid... this will leave you open to attack. What this does is lets anyone who is close to the signal that your network is there and information about your brodcast.

STRONGEST DEFENCE- (and the most extreeme)
Filter your MAC addresses. This will allow only computers YOU want to come on your network access, all others will be turned away. If security is a main point for you... you should do this method.

do these steps,.. and no one will be getting on your internet without a good fight... and most hackers give up if it is not worth the time, and just go after your neighbors who leaves there connection wide open... =)

hope this helps.. be sure to set me as the best answer if this helped... im trying to get to level 2 tonight thanks..!!

If your goal is that others cannot use your internet connection by using your wireless device, use the following easy methods
1. Don't broadcast SSID.
2. Enable Encryption

Put 192.168.0.1 in you address bar.
Look for the page that lets you set a WEP encryption key. REMEMBER THE KEY, or else you wont be able to access your wireless. Check the manual for additional info. (Look for WEP encryption in the index)

Concurring after "bostonian" (Im Bostonian myself) as well according to people smarter than me ONLY WPA encryption used along EXTREMAL Y long strong key provides real security. Download and listen to auditions 10-19 from this link:

The best way is to allow only the MAC addresses for your devices access and block all others.

The MAC is a unique hardware address for each adapter in the world.

That can be done in addition to WPA or WEP, but this is a lot simpler and safer.

use some kind of encryption and create a key for it, you can also (and should do this too) create a filter on your router that will only allow computers with particular MAC addresses to access your network, but you have to set that up manually.

You can typically allow only certain MAC addresses to connect to your network. Check your manual for further details.

Alternatively if you are trying to block a certain person from connecting, you can block just their MAC address.
