when i switch on, there is a long time (5 minutes) delay before the computer responds to commands. The hard drive is doing a lot of 'clicking'. Once it stops clicking, then there is no problem with performance. What's going on?

Have you tried cleaning out all the cookies, and doing a defrag. If not try this.

When on Internet, click on tools at the top of the screen scroll down to Internet options, then look at the temporary Internet files. Click on the delete cookies button and wait for that to complete, then click on the delete file button, when that is complete click the delete history button.

When that is done disconnect from Internet, click start, then accessories, then system tools, then defrag and follow the onscreen instructions.

Also you could be running several programs in the back ground without realising it. If you know a little bit about computers, then click start, click run and in the box type in MSCONFIG and press enter, a new screen will open up, select Startup, then a whole bunch of computer programs will be displayed, all the programs that run on start up will have a tick in the box or it will say enabled, if you know that you don't need them, uncheck the ones that you don't want and select save.

I would perform a disk defragment - it sounds like you system is finding it hard to locate files in your hard rive. This can be done through:

↓Start menu
↓Accessories
↓System tools
↓Disk Defragment

I would also do a virus scan to be on the safe side...
