I have two female counsins who are sisters who are in their mid-30s. Every time the family gets together, it's not unusual for them to huddle in a corner and whisper to each other behind their hands. This happens several times during our gatherings. Have you seen this happen during social gatherings? What do you think of it?

Since these are family gatherings, I think even Miss Manners would allow a little latitude.

"What are you two whispering about over there?"

Yes, it's rude to have obviously private conversations in public. Since they are sisters, they can converse any time.

You could plan with the rest of your family to whisper to each other, glancing at them.

See if they get it.

Or a trusted relative could mention to one or both of them that their behavior is inappropriate. If they have to share secrets right at that moment, they should leave the room.

Then the rest of you can gossip about what they're talking about.

That is just rude at a social gathering. Maybe if others started following suit they might get the hint that it is noticed and inappropriate and maybe even start wondering what they are missing or even better wonder what people may be saying about them.

It may be rude, but they have the right to keep secrets. Besides, it's probably a good bet that whatever they're saying is better off not being heard by everyone else anyway. If they want to be immature, let them.
