It has become spindly and falls over. Another name for Ruelia is false petunia, has purple flowers and is about three feet tall, is bushing out also.

it won't hurt it to cut it back. is it getting too much shade, or too much water?

it depends how much that ruelia needs trimming some say
a little bit on top then even it out on both sides like a bush yes must be done correctly as should http://www.howtotrimanruelia.com !

i have these growing near my water garden in several places.they can be very evasive,so i usually thin them out every few months.but depending on where you live,you may just want to trim them as they fall to keep them looking good.i live on the coast in south texas,so we have nearly year round growing season.
