Well, it's one of the more interesting things to do when in Mumbai to visit Haji Ali, assuming the tide is low and you can reach it on the walkway. The mosque can be reached only during low tides. During high tides crossing the causeway could be very risky. It is open all 7 days.
As you walk along the dirt path during low tide, there are quite a few vendors. I'd suggest buying a gahfiyyah to wear on your head; for some reason to got less direct stares after u put it on. Second, if someone tries to sell you a drink, make sure it's not just recycled water (i.e., look for well-sealed bottles). The mosque, once you get out there, is worth about 15 mins. of your time. It's not the hagia sophia, mind you; but it's still worth a look around.

Distance from Bombay's International Terminal at Sahar, 30 kms (Ph: 8366700) and Domestic Terminal at Santacruz, 26 km (Ph: 6116009) respectively
Ladies, as is the case in all mosques, have a separate room for their prayers. All visitors need to remove their shoes before entering the shrine.

Been to Haji Ali myself recently. Do NOT go on a Sunday or a holiday!!its killer crowded, n plus bombay heat doesn't help either.
Go on a regular weekday, and preferably, early mornings if possible.
Its quite a wonderful sight, except ofcourz for the filth that ppl have managed to gather up nearby.
Its quite a contrast with the nearby Mahalakshmi Temple, which is better maintained as compared.
But, this Dargah in itself has its own charm.

It is like any other Dargah in India...

go there before the sun starts to take effect (before 8.00 am) should be ok...

u can put on any kind of clothes as long as u have a deep pocket....

high or low tide does not make any difference unless u r really scared of the sea.

dont forget to have the ice cream near the main road once u r back from the Dargah

Reach there early morn by 7 so that you can enjoy the sunrise and ofcourse avoid the office going crowd. I think u have to be fully attired. I am not aware of any special customs becoz i am not a muslim. but ppl of all religions go there so i dont think they have any special customs. you can also visit the famous mahalakshmi temple next door and round up your piligrimage tour if you are not a harcore muslim and are purely visiting religious structures for its monumental value and beauty. have a nice time!
