Pleasure is the starting-point of every choice and of every aversion, and to it we come back, inasmuch as we make feeling the rule by which to judge of every good thing.

While therefore all pleasure because it is naturally akin to us is good, not all pleasure is should be chosen, just as all pain is an evil and yet not all pain is to be shunned.

'Pleasure is the starting-point of every choice and of every aversion, and to it we come back, inasmuch as we make feeling the rule by which to judge of every good thing.'

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/aversion

'NOUN:

A fixed, intense dislike; repugnance: formed an aversion to crowds.
The cause or object of such a feeling.
The avoidance of a thing, situation, or behavior because it has been associated with an unpleasant or painful stimulus.
Obsolete The act of turning away or averting. '

It is of value to note that the ending or diminishing of a pain is experienced as a kind of pleasure. I would not think the immediate notion in my mind to a bad object or person would be pleasure as the negative judgement needs pain as its definer. That 'pleasure is the starting point of every choice' is antithesis to 'pain is the starting point for every choice'. One proposition proposes that we are born infinitely negative, and the other that we are born infinitely positive. Which do you suppose is true? It is better to error on the side for caution or safety than gain. We begin as brutish primitives, and with hope, wisdom, knowledge and luck we grow to be mediately and consciously positive and aware or conscious of our immediate negatability.

'While therefore all pleasure because it is naturally akin to us is good, not all pleasure is should be chosen, just as all pain is an evil and yet not all pain is to be shunned.'

Mediately self disciplined to endure pain for the sake of a greater good, at its successful recession, is experienced as pleasure. Not any pleasure should be chosen at any time; that would be the unself mediated consciousness, the immediate pleasure choices of the lesser good.

I disagree. Pleasure and pain are the reactions (effects) to a cuase. Its what people do to get there that can be good or evil.

If you place your hand on a hot surface, you feel pain. Its your body telling you to take your hand away from danger.

If someone Places your hand on a hot surface, you feel pain. Its also your body telling you to take your hand away from danger.

So is the Pain evil? No The cause of the pain is evil. The same with pleasure. A serial killer derives pleasure from murder. Is pleasure evil? no its the way the killer derives it.

Therefore neither should be shuned as good or evil. They both have necessary funtions. They help to keep us alive and healthy. its peoples actions that come into question.

I guess you've to agree to DISagree... I mean to everything else, too much of a good thing can be bad for you.
So moderation is key, that & good judgment.
To feel pleasure, in order to achieve that one must be able to accept pain is the gist of those 2 statements, I think, lol=P
You can't have one without the other.
Basically, nothing comes easily without having to 'fight' for it initially.
