The answer depends on what you will use it for. MACs have fabulous graphics (even PowerPoint is 100% more impressive on MAC) so if your primary goal is to edit video, photos, or other graphics there's no question that you want a MAC. The MAC laptops even look cool. I also agree that there are fewer security risks with a MAC, but that's because the target isn't as rich as it is in the PC world (in other words, most people use a PC so hackers focus there).
If you are more concerned with "mundane" scientific things (like me) or non-graphic related tasks/programs then a PC is your best option. You can get a great PC for less money than a MAC and there's no extra work to share your file with most others.
If you still can't decide, check the support for any software you know you'll need. Support for MACs is still somewhat limited so that may be the deciding factor for you.

A Mac usually runs the operating system OSX now-a-days which is based off of UNIX. A PC is a generic computer that typically runs Microsoft Windows.
The vast majority of applications run on Windows and it is well supported, but it is often attacked by virii and spyware. OSX has been relatively safe due to both its design and its relative obscurity.
Overall I do hate Windows, but I have not used OSX enough to make an overall decision.

Generally, it just depends on what you want to do.
PC's are great for just general use. Email, chatting, etc. While Macs are good for that too, PCs will generally fit into the budget of the consumer that just wants to do this better.
Macs are pretty good computers for things like the arts. Most Macs on the market today are fitted with cutting edge technology that's great for using programs like LogicPro and GarageBand. Not that Windows is without its programs like that, it's just the programs on Mac tend to work better in my opinion.
So generally, it just depends on your budget, and your computing needs.

90+ % of the planet prefers PC (usually Windows!)
Most software runs on Windows.
Macs can be fun, but are usually a bigger investment...make sure the program you want to use runs on it!
