The only reasons it is classified as the gay capital of the United states is that is the city where the gay rights movement began and they are open to the lifestyle. There are many other cities just as accepting to it however. I live in North Florida (very narrow minded) but I lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a year, and almost all of South Florida (West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami) are extremely open to homosexuals. There are gay pride flags on almost every street. I have visited San Francisco and I would have to say that South Florida is actually more open to the lifestyle.

Its not the gay capital. It is however a very liberal city where gays make up a very large percent of the population. Being a huge tourist destination, the center of huge metropolitan area and origin of many of today's progressive movements (not just gay) makes it seem like the center of gay America.

As a previous responder mentioned, New York has many more gay people than any other city in the country and being the headquarters of so much industry, media, arts, and finance it probably would get the nod as gay capital if such a thing existed. But San Francisco is still a close runner up and possibly a sentimental favorite.

San Francisco California's: Castro District Washington DC's : DuPont Circle Georgia's: warm-lanta! Miami Florida's : South coastline i've got heard that Sydney Australia, Paris, Chelsey district of London, and Thailand are another international gay Mecca's.

Who views it that way? San Francisco's gay population is approximately 80,000. New York's gay population is estimated at Between 900,000 - 1,000,000.

New York City has the largest out gay population of any city worldwide—the possibilities are endless. Most people would agree that there are three distinct, but bordering gay neighborhoods in NYC. The oldest is Greenwich Village, or “the village”. The heart of this beautiful neighborhood of brownstone houses is Christopher Street. On this street is the Stonewall Inn where the Stonewall riots occurred in 1969, thus beginning the gay rights movement.

San Francisco is much more open to the gay lifestyle than ost other cities in the U.S. The city leaders are in total support as well as the majority of the community.

i feel it is called thegay capitol because of the bohemian way of life there. bohemians are live and let live creatures and are not violent or discriminatory in any way. there is also a large but not too large gay population there. but it is not just the gay population it is the straight population there that really sets the mood for the city. they are the most open minded friendly str8 people in a big city as far as america is concerned.the bohemians started in the 1970's i think but since that time they have grown and matured and had kids and taught their kids their beliefs and their friends and family and newbies to the city and since that time it has grown into one of the largest pro everything cities in the country.

Well from what I've heard there are a lot of gay people there. My bestfriend moved out there and she said they had a gay day at Six Flags. Hell they should have one of those at the Gurnee Six Flags, but they don't so I guess thats why. They also have the biggest gay pride parade too.

Due to SF being an extremely liberal city, it has an amazingly large percentage of homosexual citizens as compared to other cities. But there are plenty of heterosexuals living there, as well.
