If you're talking about continued "life on Earth" as "the dominant species", this bein the "age of man", I'd say the answer is multi-fold. There's the damage we're constantly doing to the environment; greenhouse gases, fossil fuel consumption, o-zone layer issues, pollution on various environmental fronts...etc...

But there's also the man vs. man issue. Y'know? Even with a perfect environment we still have "war". We still have people and groups, and cultures, etc... that just don't get along, and will there ever be a day we can all live in peace? I'd like to think so. I'll continue to hope so, and I think that's all I can do.

Your question is really insightful. I appreciate it.

My simple answer is:

1. We didn't have the environmental issues that continue to threaten the existence of every living thing on this planet, 200 years ago. Heck, not even 100 years ago. We need to consider that maybe the "good 'ole days" had us doing something right, and so we should get back to our roots somehow.

2. Tolerance. %100 straight up, in your face, "Tolerance". Don't like what someone else believes in? "BE COOL" We share a BIG space here on planet Earth, find somewhere else to be and don't be offended or take it personally... this world is big enough for all of us to notice confrontation when it's staring us down and to just "walk away". Life's too short to die for words written in someone else's book.

Mankind will always be around. Our population may have to decrease as resources and land run out, but mankind will be around untill there is a natural disaster big enough to wipe every piece of life off the face of a planet (I say "A" planet because we won't be on earth forever). Even then, by the time that happens, we will have the technology to predict such events, and will have made a plan to deal with it. Humans are the champions of the uiniverse, we are the most resiliant creatures in exsistence. Just look at the ice age. Humans survived the ice age with nothing more than primitive tools and a strong will. The will to live on in humans is so strong it can overcome anything.

Religion as always is the biggest threat to the species we call humans.
Humans must start an effort towards colonizing space or perish, and religion stands in the way.
God isn't there and isn't coming when the planet begans top deteiorate from the Sun's using up it's fuel, and eventually boiling away the oceans and all life.
Only humans can do that and there are many people who would have the race go down in death and extinction waiitng on their gods, rather than seeing thier religion fail in their eyes.

The next is over population and mixing of the races which is leading to a decline in education, science, common sense, and a tremendous climb in crime, national sense of duty in america and europe.

Ignorance, and the tendency for people to be followers. They believe everything they are told by religious authorities. That means that if religious authorities tell them that all liberals must be killed, they won't question it and will just do it.
