I know you're going to hate me for pointing this out, but either one is grammatically correct. There is no right or wrong here. It's simply a question of degree. To what degree has your optimism impacted you? What are you really trying to say? Your intent will determine which word you choose. Say each one out loud and go with the one that feels right for your intended message.

And by the way -- it's "moments like these WHEN" (not where).

It's moments like these where my optimism has gotten the ____ (better/best) of me.

It helps me to type or write it out. I say the answer is best. Good luck. :)

Is Rupert Murdoch the ugliest Billionaire on the planet?

His face looks like a dried up prune that's been left on a refrigerator shelf for 6 months. He recently had a couple of kids with his latest sex toy wife Wendi Deng who obviously married him for his money and is awaiting the much heralded event of his passing so she can reap the rewards of being a billionaires widow. There is no other reason a cute young chick like that would waste time on a hideous deformed dwarf like Rupert Murdoch. That old fart must be close to kicking the bucket by now. He looks atleast 200 years old? I just hope his ancient decrepit sperm didn't cause too many genetic defects in his latest offspring. Poor Chloe. She's only 3 and her pop will probably be dead before she's 6. Mind you it's probably for the best. He's old enough to be her great great grandfather.

You would use "best" here. When comparing three or more things, you use the superlative form which is "best". Now I know we can't tell whether "moments" is referring to just two instances or more, but the tendency is to believe it is more than two.

I agree with better being the more correct choice.

doesn't matter.

better means better than the moment
best means better than you have ever been

so in context of your sentence you probably want to say better
