Just leave it alone, algae is a natural occurrence with tap water.

Not a question I usually hear, but I can give advice in reverse. Generally it just grows if there is light, and nutrients. If you are having trouble growing it consider adding aquarium fertilizer(iron, and phosphates), and a couple of small plants. (Algae often comes with plants, but too many plants will compete with algae.) Then be sure you are getting lots of light.
PS- If you are trying feed pleco or the like it's easier and cheap to buy algae wafers, or zucchini. They don't need food more than 2-3 times a week.

chea all of these answers take too long. The easiest way if u want algae for whatever purpose is to put a bucket of clean fresh water out in the sun, add something like a slate, or a big rock, and add liquid aquatic plant fertilizer into the water. Adding more fertilizer will increase growth rate but i wouldnt add too much. After a couple days, check to see if the rock has algae on it, if it does, drop it into your fish tank.

Place your tank in front of a south facing window, put white gravel in it, leave the light on all the time (even all night), overfeed your fish, take out any live plants you may have in there and don't do any partial water changes.
The fish will die, but you will definitely have algae. Algae spores are everywhere, you don't need to go look for them.

Put whatever you're trying to grow algae in a sunny hot place. But if fish are in the tank...i wouldn't do that.
