"Hallelujah" is perhaps the worlds' most-covered pop song, complete with stirring music and rivetting lyrics that strike a chord with the listener. Many musicians have covered this song, from Imogen Heap to Gavin DeGraw to Jeff Buckley to Rufus Wainwright.

But which version do you like the best?

Other than Cohen's, my favorite would be John Cale's on "Fragments of a Rainy Season". You can listen to a 30-second snip at: http://www.amazon.com/Fragments-Rainy-Season-John-Cale/dp/B000000624

The cd also includes a wonderfully psychotic cover of "Heartbreak Hotel".

Cale and Cohen were actually friends during the Velvet Underground days. Cohen was living at the Chelsea Hotel and used to go to see the Velvet Underground perform because he had a thing for Nico, the lead singer. Lou Reed, seeing Cohen there often, kept trying to hang out with him, and Cohen struck up a friendship with Cale in order to distance himself from Reed somewhat.

Leonard Cohen's version is my favorite. But I still love Jeff Buckley's cover and Rufus Wainwright's cover.

Allison Crowe's passionate recording of Hallelujah is my favorite. It's so soulful. It's on an album called Tidings.

Some of Leonard Cohen's other songs, like Suzanne, have been covered more often but I think this is the most beautiful and moving.

I really like Jeff Buckley's version.
Such a shame that he died so young.
His 'Grace' album is sublime.
