A creation myth would be the easiest thing. Take an object (anything, a tree or rocks or oceans or applesauce) and invent how it was created. Maybe the first ocean formed because a great fat rhinoceros felt left out of the rhino games, so he cried for ten years and an ocean formed. Then he jumped in and swam around, and that was the beginning of whales.

Ok, so that's silly, but you get the idea. Take something really basic and think of a way that it might have gotten made. I don't know about the "rules" for the assignment, but gods, faeries, etc. are really common in myths.

When you think about it all fairytales have a hero, a villian, a happy ending and a good moral value. So, you need to think about the thought you want to convey first... like being selfish... nothing good ever comes out of that. Then have a hero like a feel good animal... that can talk of course. A villian could be a grouchy, pesty insect... something that no one likes. Or at least that is how I would do it... good luck!

I like stories about animals acting like humans (like Aesop's Fables.) Try imagining how, say, a dog would think of creation, or the kind of fairy tales squirrels would get into. Cats, birds, bugs...there are all kinds of options.

If you're really stuck, read some fairy tales for inspiration. Try to read some from a culture you're not 100% familiar with--sometimes, when you read Cinderella or Snow White, all you see is Disney. Read stuff you haven't read before so that it's fresh and it makes you think about it.

Imagine telling a story. That's how folktales really got started. Don't think of it as a writing assignment...think of it like you're sitting at a campfire and it's your turn to entertain the crowd. Fairy tales have a natural flow to them, so don't be too logical and left-brained about it.

Have fun and good luck! There's always room for more fairy tales in the world!

How about a story about a collection of animals in the forest who all get up on the same day and tell a lie about something that happened that day, and what the consquences were to each by the end of the day. Nothing horrible, of course ... it's for children(!) but something with a lesson about truth.

Classic faerie tales have some sort of moral behind them, so it would be good to start with that.

They also, usually, have a warning of some kind, a breaking of that warning and punishment that is eventually over come by a warning.

So. Try to think of what you want to teach a child first, before you go about trying to create characters.

Just remember no stories are original. You find something that is important to you, convey it through the story, your characters may not be completely original. Whats important is that you teach the children a lesson in a fresh and interesting way.
