You bring up a good point though
I will guess you ask this question because you are genuinely concerned about the world
Now, IMO the whole 'global warming' is not good science but very good politics
and very good media material
BUT EVEN IF I did agree with the prospect that HUMANS are damaging the WORLD by what they drive AND should be punished/banned for damaging behavior, choice of vehicle is only a small matter.
Want to know whats more 'environmentally damaging'?
MEAT! Yes, it takes 3x as many chemical processes to raise meat to eat than vegetables!!
what else?
BATHING, and WASHING clothes, wastes water, creates huge phosphate runoff
BUILDING A NEW HOME! this perennial economic engine causes huge damage to the enviroment, cutting down trees, destroying natrual habitats, adding more usage of the septic and water systems, there are already plenty of existing homes for people to live in.
BUYING IMPORTS, sure it saves the US enviroment but damages the enviroment in the 3rd world, were things are dangerous enough already
ANY OIL CONSUMPTION is bad, so what if a Prius uses 1% of the fuel of a Hummer? The infrastrucure around oil refining and gasoline distribution still need to exist. ITS ALL EQUALLY BAD
Go ahead, buy a Hummer and enjoy it. If you really want to minimize your enviromental impact, become vegitarian, buy ONLY local goods, and live in an old house in an old neighbor hood. Don't choose a Prius over the Hummer, that's like shooting your dog with a .22 instead of shotgun, its still gonna hurt your dog. Want to make a difference? Ride a bicycle

That's a toughie. I drive a 4 cylinder Jeep Wrangler and constantly pull up beside those huge, overblown tin boxes and laugh at them. Makes me want to tell them how sorry I feel for the size of their...equipment. Outlawing them, well, I am not sure that would be a fair or equitable way to deal with them. You would have thought the gas hitting almost 4 bucks a gallon would have given them a clue wouldn't you? I also think of the poster I saw that said "Our kids are getting blown to bits so Soccer Moms can go offroad". I'm sorry, I don't really have an alternative solution, free enterprise dictates that if there's a market, have at it. Dunno...
And as to meeting safety standards, they fall under a category that has very little in the way of regulation. They are considered farm equipment.

no but a standard should be set for gas mileage. i say 25 mpg city, should be the minimum. if a hummer and all other suv's meet the requirement then im good. but right now i have little respect for hummers. I do however own an SUV, but i get about 20 mpg city, which although im not too happy about, is better than most other suv's.

Why? my hummer H1 runs exclusively on biodiesel I make from vegetable cooking oil I get for free from 3 local chinese restaurants. It pollutes less than any hybrid, costs less to operate, and does not support any arab conglomerate. Too bad I can't get my local mcdonald's to give me oil(they said it's a liability concern) , I'd really enjoy the exhaust smelling like french fries(I mean freedom fries).

I'm not crazy about either, but do that and you start a verrry slippery slope. I really wish people would just take it on themselves not to see these things as this big "status symbol" and realize the combined harm they do to the environment. But hey, I should check into public transportation and more walking myself so I'm not gonna criticize em' too much.

No. Driving SUVs is matter of personal choice. A right many people in this country defend even though it, 99.9% of the time, means the death of an innocent unborn child.

On what grounds? They may use lot's of gas ,but that does not
give it a good reason to outlaw the vehicles. So my answer is NO!!

The government needs to apply fuel economy standards (CAFE) to trucks, as well as automobiles. To date, they have not done so.
These fuel economy standards would essentially make Hummers and the large SUV's obsolete.

Why should they be outlawed? As long as they meet the safety requirements to be on US highways, its nobodies damn business what people drive. This is still a free country the last time I looked.
