Pair bonding for one thing. Mating is the principle purpose, but sex also is an incentive for the formation of a primary social unit in a cooperative effort to find food and shelter, with or without the prospect of adding children to the unit. It of course, offers and affords pleasure as an incentive to cement the bonding process.
Of course the prospect of pleasure during sex can adversely affect the bond if at some point the event of that pleasure seems more promising outside the bond.
But such it is with all aspects of animal and human society.

1) To 'legitimize' a marriage. This is an archaic reason, though- way back when that was the main way they were 'sealed', so to speak. If a man didn't take his wife's 'maidenhead' way back when, they wouldn't be considered married, and even now, if you told someone you were married but never had had sex, they might feel you were truly married.
2) To connect with someone in a deeply emotional way as manifested by your physical connection. It's about expressing your love through your body.
3) To lose one's virginity. A lot of people have sex for the first time with the sole intention of 'getting it out of the way'/'getting it over with'.
4) To experience sexual release, because it feels good.
5) To make money, if you are a prostitute.
Those are the ones that come instantly to mind.

To connect with another human being and for experiencing a whole range of feelings. It is a benefit of living in a body. It helps regulate stress too.

Well obviously it isn't part of the reason at all for gay people. I think tension-release is a big part of it and also to feel wanted.
