why is affirmative action wrong?

I'm white and I want to get into a good college. Why can't there be a scholarship for just whites, or maybe and here's an idea, dissolvement of affirmative action in general.

Affirmative action is not a quota system. there is nothing that says a colleges has to let in x amount of blacks and x amount of Hispanics.

yeah there are scholarships given to people because of there ethnic background. but they are privately funded.

many scholarships out there are merit or need based. if you have the grades then don't worry. If you have financial need then don't worry.

I saw something where there was someone giving scholarships out but you had to be white. i remember where or if they still do it.

when you get to school take a social equality class or something similar.

Affirmative action on any issue simply means "to act". There are serious problems related to opportunity in the United States, some of which is related to past wrongs. It is the current focus on race based quotas which raises the biggest arguments. Any desire to abolish the current format of Affirmative Action must be tied to a replacement idea which improves the opportunities for inter-city, impoverished families. I believe the Federal Dept of Education should focus exclusively on ensuring inter-city schools perform as well as their sub-urban counterparts. The measure of success would be when college admissions catch up without admission preference. If you teach these children how to break the poverty cycle, then you teach them what they need to achieve the creed, that all men are created equal!

Affirmative action is wrong because if we truly want our children to live in a society where race or gender does not matter, affirmative action has no place in that society.
All it does is promote the idea that you a black woman or you a latino man, could never have gotten that job based on merit alone, you got the job because of your ethnicity or gender.

Gender and race should never be an issue in these matters.

There are plenty of these type of groups in the good ole USA... they are called good ole boys clubs... you will find them at any golf course, country club for men only and in board of executive meetings.

Affirmative Action is needed now more than ever before.

Why now more than ever? Because while the discrepancies in the past were more vast, today we are running into the white males that are feeling their loss of power... they are feeling this and started calling it discrimination, racism, etc...

That was to be predicted any time a certain race, gender begins to lose complete control.

What they don't realize is that less than 100 years ago a female couldn't attend college nor could she vote. So they believe in 'the best man for the job'... just because women and race minorities now have those privileges.

They fail to realize that there have been 1000s of years of oppression that have resulted in the behind the scenes deals that give ppl advantages... the on the golf course deals, or after work at the bar, etc....

Beyond that and more important, are the studies on affirmative action where they clearly show it is human nature to hire a person 'like yourself' in the job processing.

A white male with 3 kids and a wife will tend to hire a white family man after an interview not because he consciously chooses to... but the study shows that is human nature.

Affirmative Action is necessary because of that exact human nature. When you have one group, white males, doing the hiring, what do you think the control factor will remain as? = white males. How many white males really without being told to, hire blacks or women on the odds? Not many unless they are told to be conscious of it.

That is the exact reason affirmative action is necessary.

Some argue that this exact study illustrates that when women or minorities get into hiring positions, that they will hire like ppl to them. This is not true. The studies showed that they do tend to hire more minorities but nowhere near the numbers of 'like ppl' like the white males do. The studies concluded it was due to minorities and females being more 'consciously aware' of race and gender and making an conscious effort to be fair.

It is racist. However, there are bigger issues in America. There are many minorities that think affirmative action is wrong. I prefer the merit system. If a white deserves going to college or deserves getting the job more, he or she should have it.

affirmative action is wrong for so many reasons i was talking to a friend of mine who is a IT tech in his company they hired a blk woman for a tech job strictly because of being a blk woman it didn't matter that she didn't know **** about her job and didn't belong there they couldn't fire her because they knew they would have a law suite on their hands. Now imagine if a white man came looking for a job as a IT tech and he didn't know Jack **** on computers like her do you think he would have gotten the job HELL NO!! if you hire a person based strictly on their race or gender not on there qualifications how is that fair to someone who is?
