I dont get my home work at all, please explain & help me with this problem:

The second of two numbers is 7 times the first. Their um is 72. Find the numbers

X + Y = 72 = 8 X

X = 9

therefore x+7x=72(7 times means multiply by 7)
8x=72
8x/8=72/8(dividing both by 8)
x=9
since the first no is 9 and the second no is 7x9=63
the nos are 9 and 63

Now lets see if we're correct
8x9=72(substituting)
72=72
