its for my science fair project i need to add details for the purpose

No, you are supposed to measure it for your science fair project.

The purpose would be "why do you want to know which makes ice melt faster?"

The reason is that street/road crews will put down salt, sand, or both on icy roads. Why would they do that? Maybe you should measure how slippery an icy surface is after it has salt applied, sand applied, or both applied.
