I have had several pine trees cut down and have an oak tree who's roots are above the ground. In addition to those roots, there are roots above the ground from the trees that has been removed.

Why don't you have them ground out. This method works so well. Be sure to shop around for prices, I have found there to be GREAT differences!

For the trees cut down, the only effective way to remove the roots is to cut them out. Chemicals do not work to hasten their decomposition. For the oak tree, if you care about the tree and want it to continue to live, you should not cut its roots. This would open it to infection and reduce its ability to stand in strong wind.
