I intend to plug ONLY the cable modem and router into a UPS (not the computer itself, which is on a separate surge protector). What size UPS do I need?

Also, is this a better option than an APC SurgeArrest 11 outlet?

Any inexpensive UPS of 300 - 500 KVA will do fine. Those don't draw much power and will run for quite some time on a small UPS.

A UPS is definitely better than a surge arrestor simply because it would run the units in case of a blackout or brownout (long period of low voltage) and surge arrestor won't. An APC Back-UPS 350 would do just fine for your application especially because it has a separate socket for wall-wart power supplies. You will have two of them and they crowd a UPS very quick, so having one moved a bit away is very handy. Also, it hangs on a wall, which many UPSes in its price range don't. Just be careful and make sure you plug the power supplies for the modem and the router into the battery protected side, not just the surge. Only 4 outlets are battery protected, the other 4 are not.
