My friends bought a land parcel that has an 1800's cemetery on it. Do they actually OWN it, headstones & all? Seems like the town should own it, not an individual. If it was "abandoned" years ago, does ownership then go to the landowner? They are trying to clean it up because the trees are tipping the headstones over. Any help easing my curiosity is appreciated.

Many cemeteries have been abandoned over the years for lack of funds. Check with the county to see if in deed is was case,If it was then your friends do own it, and other then cleaning it up there isn't any thing that can be done with the land. States have laws specific to cemeteries and disinterring bodies, weather the grave site was abandoned or not.
