Figuring out a word problem is simply a question of converting the English into terms.
6 more than (plus 6)
5 times a number (5x)
is the same as (EQUALS)
9 less than (minus 9)
twice the number (2x)
Come on people -- HELP someone by explaining HOW to set something up. Don't just DO the person's homework for them.

OK--I'm going to let you know how to solve this and similar problems. It's done in steps. Step 1) Read the problem and be sure you understand what it says.(This sounds obvious but it's where most people lose it) Step 2) Figure out a way to state the info you are given in mathematical terms. Let's do that-----5 times a number-----let's let X represent the number-----so 5 times a number is 5 times X or 5X. 6 more than that means we have to add 6, so 6 more than 5 times a number would be 6 + 5X.That takes care of the first part of the information. Twice the number (still X) is 2 times X or 2X. 9 less than that means we have to subtract 9 from 2X so we get 2X - 9. Now saying two things are the same is the same as saying they are equal, so we can say that 6 + 5X = 2X - 9.
Now, in order to figure out what X is, we have to get all the X's on one side of that = sign and all the numbers on the other. The trick here is that whatever you do on one side of the = sign you have to do on the other. Let's subtract 2X from both sides------6 + 5X - 2X = 2X - 2X - 9. Let's make this simpler-----5X - 2X = 3X, so 6 + 5X - 2X = 6 + 3X. That's one side . Now, for the other. 2X - 2X = 0X, so the other side becomes 0X - 9, or 0 - 9, or just - 9.
We're getting there! Where we're at now is 6 + 3X = - 9.
Let's subtract 6 from both sides-----6 - 6 + 3X is 0 + 3X, or just 3X and - 9 - 6 = - 15. Now we have 3X = - 15. - 15/3 = -5 so that's the answer.---------*-5 *---------- AND THAT IS HOW TO SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. PLEASE REMEMBER THIS OR PRINT IT OUT FOR YOURSELF.

heres the maths
5x+6=2x-9
5x-5x 6=2x-5x-9(sub both sides by 5x)
6=-3x-9
6+9=-3x-9+9(adding both sides by 9)
15=-3x
15/-3=-3x/-3(dividing both sides by -3x
-5=x
therefore the no is -5
Verification
5x+6=2x-9
5x-5+6=2x-5-9(substituting)
-25+6=-10-9
-19=-19
if u did'nt understand then u can IM me and i'll explain

6+5x=2x-9
the get the X's on one side and the #'s on the other by adding and subtracting
3x=-15
then divide by three
x=-5
