Most crocodilians are protected by Endangered Animal Legislation, however through poaching, it is estimated that about 5,000 are killed (most are in Africa). Other crocodilians are destroyed because of the danger to humans but the number is rather small, perhaps 500 to 1,000. In Florida, Thailand, Malaysia and elsewhere, Crocodile farms produce animals for the leather and to a smaller degree for the meat (you can buy alligator meat in many places in Florida and it's on the menu in restaurants there).Because of our awareness of the enviroment and vanishing species, crocodilians are making a slow come-back and it Florida, Louisiana and Georgia, the population has returned and may have to be controlled by hunting by license. Alligators are often found in swimming pools. The gharials and the False Gavial are being bred in captivity as their wild population was not sustainable. Crocodiles are also responsible for more human deaths than all of the other predators, such as tigers, etc (snakes are not predators).
