I went to a doctor originally who diagnosed hematoma and said it would heal on its own. It pretty much has, but it's still very lumpy and painful to touch. Would massage help?

Generally, a hemotoma will work it's way out. I have to tell you this not to scare you, but to make you aware, that a deep thigh bruise can develop a condition known as myositis ossificans traumatica (I believe that's the name). It is simply bone formation in the muscle fibers causing a decrease in contractile tissue in the muscle belly. Calcium deposits from the bleeding is deposited and forms the bone. This is not an overnight process. Conservative treatment of various types can me employed. Because the area has been subjected to some considerable trauma, you don't want to aggravate the area. Contrasting heat and cold may help, as well a pulsed ultrasound. Also try to protct the area if you will be participating in any activties where there is a liklihood of additional contact with the injury.

This has been a very brief discription of a complex injury. Just something to think about. I authored an article on this very subject while I was in graduate school. Hope it helps.

yes massage will help but around the lump.. do not let the therapist touch it but massage your thigh up and down . blood circulation and oxygen will increase in the area and it should help the hematom to resorb faster.
