Depends on what you mean by young, and also what you mean by driving. If you mean 16, which is the average age for learning to drive, it's because that is a good time to learn.Young people have good reflexes, and can be taught safe driving habits. BUT, and this is a big but, they should not be turned loose to drive with no restrictions. Some jurisdictions have a graduated license. You apply for the learner's license and do the written theory test. Then you take driving lessons from a registered professional instructor. Learning your dad's bad habits isn't a good idea, and it is very difficult for most parents to be effective teachers when it comes to their own children. After six months on the learner's license, there is a road test. If the driver passes that, they get a new driver designation, and the letter 'N' to put on the rear of their car. There are restrictions with this type of license. The new driver is not allowed to have more than one other teenager in the car. They can have as many adults as are willing to ride with them, but can't pack the car full of their buddies and take off. Peers can egg each other on, and the new driver does not always have the experience or the maturity to ignore that type of pressure. At the end of two years, the driver is tested again, and if s/he is successful, gets a full license.
This type of program works well. It is graduated, calls for control and supervision, and allows the teen to learn to drive responsibly. By the time the program is finished, the 16 year old is 18+ and hopefully, a capable, and safe, driver. This achievement is recognized in lower car insurance rates for drivers who have completed these sorts of programs.
Am I in favor of 14-year olds driving? No.
Am I in favor of 16-year olds driving with no restrictions? No.

They should not.
Nation wide statistics prove beyond a doubt that Teen ages are a danger to themselves and others while driving.
This is not a generalization. It is statistical fact.
So, what is the correct age? Perhaps 18 years old....with mandatory driver Training as a starter and 30 days community sevice at a Hospital ER.....during the Hours of 7:00 PM to Midnight.
I was Teenager Once.

They shouldn't. I have been in two accidents and both times were caused by 16 year olds. My husband's parked car was also hit by a 16 year old driver.
They aren't old enough to drink, vote, or live anywhere without legal guardians, but somehow, the society seems to think that teenagers are old enough to drive several thousand pounds of metal and fiberglass at freeway speeds.

I couldn't wait to drive, it meant freedom! But I was also taught safe driving habits from my parents and was taught responsibility at a very young age.

Not THAT young.....but I see what you mean. I think probably so that they can practice and get used to it so that when they get jobs and have to go all over the country they can drive themselves.
Or just because the govt. doesn't care enough to change the laws...

Because if they waited much longer they would no longer be teenagers and you would have to re-word your question.
