Blessed: That is a good question. I often wonder the same thing. The comments others have made here identify differences. But I too wonder how this country can split so evenly in most elections. It is rare for most candidates to win more than 55% of the votes.
I would add to the list of factors: many Americans are poorly informed about issues and how our economy works. They are easily misled by perverse campaign strategies that focus on issues with little impact on the average citizen's life.

Because we are a 'melting pot' of various types of individuals.
We have all of the different ethnic types. We have conservatives, liberals, moderates, independents, communists, socialists, isolationists, and so on. We also have Catholics, Non-catholics, Muslims, Jews, Buddists, Hindus, Pagans, Satanists, and atheists.
We have everyone represented here. Plus, everyone has rights also. Everyone also has the right to disagree with everyone else.
But, are we divided or just united.

Because liberals and Conservatives have such opposite beliefs and the divide is only getting larger.

If you mean the US, as a European I would say there is a decided lack of common sense, especially on the side of ordinary people supporting the political right.
Too much Fox, in short.

horrible education standards, and a shallow media that portrays a sought after lifestyle unconnected with reality and morally un-sound. and are sheltered from the truth. there are many people who believe that America is the center of the world and has the right to do what it pleases, and there are others who think differently and realize that the American view is that of a minority.

Fundmental Christianity.
Seriously -- that's the reason.
That group took over the republican party, refuses to recognize the law and the constitution, wants to replace science with fairy-tales in schools, and will not compromise in any way, shape or form. They've driven the republican party away from their roots in "no government interference in personal lives" to "legislate fundamental christian morality," the complete opposite of what they used to stand for. With their "warrior for jesus" attitude, they alienate everyone who doesn't believe as they do, refuse to work with anybody who doesn't agree with them 100%, and want to turn our government into a theocracy.
If they'd go off and buy an island someplace and found their own theocratic country, the rest of us could get on with the business of governing and keeping this country free, successful, and the light of the world when it comes to human rights. As it is, a battle is coming with them...and it won't be pretty.
