a right triangle is a triangle with one angle measuring 90 degrees. In a right triangle, the sides are related by Pythagorean Theorem,c^2=a^2+b^2 where c is the hypotenuse(the side opposite the 90 degree angle). Find the hypotenuse when the other 2 sides' measurements are 3 feet and 4 feet.

College algebra? You can't be serious...

c² = a² + b²; where c = the hypotenuse
c² = 3² + 4² --- Insert your known numbers...
c² = (3)(3) + (4)(4) --- Anything squared is itself times itself...
c² = 9 + 16 --- Add the two numbers together...
c² = 25 --- Find the square root of each side...
c = 5 or -5 --- (5)(5) = 25 and (-5)(-5) = 25

Since the measure can't be -5, we know the answer has to be 5.

Answer: The hypotenuse is 5 feet in length.

This is the famous 3,4,5 triangle You should remember it as it comes up often. Multiples of it are also true, for example,
6^2 +8^2 = 10^2 and 12^2 + 16^2 = 20^2. Another set is 5^2 +12^2 = 13^2. Remember these as they will speed things up for you greatly.

This can be solved by Pythagorian Triples, a series of triangles with sides that have nice round numbers, a 3,4,5 triangle is one of them.

as two of the sides are 3 and 4 the other side must be 5, keep an eye out for these, maths teachers always put them in so it is easier to mark

a^2+b^2=2^2

3^2+4^2=3^2
9+16=c^2
9+16=25
sqrt25=5
c=5
