The top of a Mermaid's scales which connect the fish portion to the human half is like the foreskin of a penis. The Mermaid has to peel it back to mate (in her case peel it "down"). She must also peel it back to pop the eggs out after they've been fertilized.

I think it would be a combination of fish and human. The Mermaid and her mate would find a secluded cave during the warm months of the year and after a ritual dance and a magical incantation a fertilized egg would be placed in a giant clam shell for 7 days. The couple would stay with the egg to protect it while it was nourished by the ocean and then like a marsupial when it had grown strong enough it would be placed in a pouch in the maids belly where it would finish its gestation. After several months it would be born live and the mother would breastfeed it until it was grown enough to be weaned.

I'm guessing that it's the same way that fish have babies, the female lays the eggs and the male secretes his semen over it to fertilize the eggs. Of course this is just a guess because mermaids aren't real. But because they are also half human, they breast feed the babies. Another idea is that the male's semen is absorbed by the scales of the female and when the babies are born, the fins of the mothers shed to grow new ones.

Mermaids are in a conspiracy with the sirens to seduce sailors into jumping overboard into the sea or crash their ships into the rocks. They then mate with the sailors as they are drowning, and spawn live merpeople just like sharks.
Suspected mermale eggs are dumped onto the shores of Ibiza and other vacation spots, and this is why girls who swear they did not cheat on their boyfriends while they were gone, turn up pregnant later. They are telling the truth.

Mermaids, being warm blooded, much like whales or dolphins, would give live birth. Can you imagine the love and nurturing that that child receives from all the other merpeople!

The tail thingy is actually just like a layer of pants. Underneath that they have legs and their normal human body parts. They wear those tails as an advantage in the water. So they take them off, mate, then put them back on.
