95 hamburgers
190 cheeseburgers. Let's put it into math.

c=number of cheeseburgers
h=number of hamburgers

c+h=285
c=2h (# of cheeseburgers=2 times number of hamburgers)

Plugging in 2h for c, we get

2h+h=285
3h=285
h=95.

Now, solving for c, we get 190 cheeseburgers sold. That's your answer.

I hope this helps.

one way:
h=hamburgers
c = cheeseburgers

cheeseburgers + hamburgers = 285
c + h = 285

c = 2 * hamburgers
c = 2 * h

substitute
(2h) + h = 285
3h =285
h = 95

now to find cheeseburgers
c = 2h
c = 2(95)

or
c + h =285
c + 95 = 285

either way, c =190

3x=285
divide by 3
x=95

plug back in
(95)+2(95)=285
95 hamburgers
190 cheeseburgers
