Tinsel was always a big deal, bubble lights, glass balls and various shaped ornaments kept over the years, paper or popcorn chains, large multi-color bulb tree lights surrounded by angel hair which was spun asbestos, no metalic garland, single color lights or mini lights. Tree toppers were usually an angel or a star, nothing too wild.

In the early 40s there was not a whole lot of celebrating. Most everyone on every street had someone over seas. The song "I'll Be Home For Christmas" apparently used to bring my aunts to tears around the tree.
But I digress. Colored lights were really big. And as far as ornaments anything handmade! My mother remembers that alot of their decorations were donated to USO shows and Stagedoor canteens, dance halls etc. So when the boys did come home they saw America that they remembered.
Tinsel everywhere, so much that you would pick it out of the carpet for months afterward! My mother remembers how you could barely see the tree for the tinsel!
Also, smaller presents used to be "on" the tree. Along with cards etc.
Hope this Helps

Back then, the popular thing was trees made from tinsel. They had glass balls. Otherwise, not alot of decoration.
