My son is 2 1/2 and still hasn't ever been inside a movie theater. Are you willing to leave the theater if your child gets upset and starts crying? Are you willing to be out all the money (movies aren't cheap anymore!) if you do have to leave? Wouldn't you enjoy the movie so much more if you hired a sitter? Everyone else in the theater would. Just think about all the extra movement and distractions you'd create not by the baby crying, but by you having to either get up, sit down, rummage through your bag for a toy or bottle, etc. etc. etc.
My advice, don't take a child to the movies until he can sit still for that long, and only when it's a movie for him. Otherwise, make movie going quality time for you and that someone special.

Where I live they have a "Mommies and Movies" program at the theatre. It is for mom's with children under age 3. They play regular movies but lower the volume and they play around 10 am when there is no one else around. They also do a social get together before with movie treats. There have been mom's and dad's there with 2 week old babies. They list the 8 movies that are playing at the theatre and you go to the website and vote for which one you want to see so they only play 1 movie a week. It is great!

There are many variables to this....I hadn't considered sound....sit back away from the speakers.
A concert is way louder. I think at a month old, if your baby is going to sleep through the movie or be quiet, it is fine.....BUT BE READY TO GET UP AND LEAVE THE MINUTE HE MAKES THE SLIGHTEST FUSS.
People pay good money to go to the movies and are not there to hear someone's baby cry. I go to the trouble of lining up a sitter and seldom get out with my husband and it makes me very unhappy that my evening is spoiled...might as well as stayed home and listened to my own child cry.
Once the child is old enough to make noise and really be disruptive don't bring them...also, watch what you bring him to once he is old enough to notice language, violence, sex and emotions.

My baby is three months old, and I was also debating this question. Like most people said, it's probably better to hire a babysitter. But I have a friend who brings her new baby to the movies all the time because she sleeps through the whole thing. As far as loud noises, my doctor told me that anything that doesn't hurt your ears doesn't hurt the baby. I always just rent movies!

I wouldn't risk it . At that age it is not a good idea to take your child i don't think that noise would be a big problem i think that it would ruin alot of other peoples movie experience because baby's at that age they cry alot and i don't think that would be very nice because movies can be expensive i would find a babysitter if you are wanting to go to the movies. The only way i would take my child to the movie is if it was a late show and almost nobody was in the movie theatre.

Some theaters have those early morning shows for parents with babies. Take your baby to that showing. I love children, but not in the movie theater when I've paid 10 bucks for my ticket, and I'm trying to watch a good movie.

My son went to his first movie "Cars" at age 3. I know there are theaters that have special days for mommy's/daddy's and babies. Try finding one of those. Oh, and use earplugs, if you can, in your baby's ears. The movies tend to be very loud.

You're right - it's not worth the risk of ruining their hearing at such a young age. I'd wait until they were 3 or older for this.
Gosh, back in October, this lady brought her young baby with her into SAW III... talk about weird!!!!

Don't take the baby. Hire a babysitter instead. Not only will this allow the other patrons to enjoy the movie more, it will allow you to enjoy the movie more, as well.
