Victorian England had a prison system of punishment without productivity. The Movie about Oscar Wild will show scenes of a typical Victorian prison. They had a box with a handle and a counter. You were required to turn the handle so many times a day. There were screws to give the handle resistance. After a while the screws would loosen up and the guard would and check and re-tighten the screws. Hence, the term of putting the screws to someone. I hope this helps.

I don't mean to be dismissive of your problem, but if you can't find information on workhouses in Victorian England then you need help learning to use reference materials. Workhouses during Victorian England shows up in almost every reference source you look. Every student should visit their local Library and ask the Reference Librarian how to find and\or use reference materials and how to find which reference book or internet service covers the material you need.
