Ok for starters the board of which you speak is called the motherboard or mobo for short.

You could take it out and clean it but it is better to just find someone with an aircompressor to blow out the case. Just make sure you hold all the fans down or they will spin too fast and break. Also you will want to be grounded when doing this so you won't fry any of the parts through electrostatic discharge.

Unless the fan has a speed control of some sort there is no way to make the fan itself quieter. If you want a quieter fan head over to http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=574&N=2010110574 and find one that suits your needs.

If you want to replace both the fan and the heatsink the way to go is with an all copper heatsink and a ballbearing fan. Good fans with heatsinks run about $30 to $50. If you do replace the fan and heatsink setup make sure you get some thermalgrease and make sure that it is rated for and is compatable with your processor.

To replace just the fan then find a fan that is rated for your processor and will fit on your heatsink. Those can also be found at Newegg.com.

To take the fan and heatsink off pull those levers. For just fan unscrew it from the heatsink.

The CPU fan should be blown off with "Canned air". You can get this at Radio Shack or Best Buy or a warehouse club. If it still makes noise, replace it.

Make sure that you unplug the computer and remove the batteries if it's a laptop, before you remove the side access panel. Then make certain that you "ground" yourself by grabbing the metal frame of the computer case before touching ANY inside components. Make sure that you know the type of processor that you have, Intel or AMD. So that you can get the proper CPU fan for it. The CPU fan plugs into the motherboard (just follow the wires from the fan). You will also need some "thermal grease". Get this type:

Put a BB sized droplet in the center of the CLEANED CPU before installing the new CPU fan. You can use contact cleaner from Radio Shack to clean off the old grease from the CPU.

Hi Friend!

it's safe to taking it off only when you do it carefully :-)
there are different ways to take off fan on different motherboards....
you can see it in ur motherboard's user guide and then remove it carefully.... in most of the cases cleaning fan first time makes it quiter and if it doesn't help you can get new one.... fans are not such costly - you will prefer new one seeing its cost...

thnx
&
best wishes

When you first turn the power on to your computer, your fan will run at its full speed. Then, as the BIOS loads, it may change the fan programming to make it spin at a lower speed. After the operating system loads, it may also change the fan control programming to make the fan spin at a lower speed. So the sound you hear when you first turn the computer on is that fan spinning at full speed. Later, it may only go up to full speed if the computer is hot. If the sound you hear when you first turn the computer on is the same sound you have always heard, then the problem is that the fan is being told to spin faster. If the new sound is louder on startup than the fan was before, then the problem is that the fan is louder at the same speed. Is the loud sound at startup the same as the sound was at startup before? Or is the loud sound at startup louder than previous startup sounds?

Well , first , some fans make a little noise , depending on the maker , model etc , now , when the fan starts is cause your cpu is heating up VERY NASTY, so the fan as to compensate for it by blowing more than it should . You dont have to take it , just buy a air pressure can , and just spray it . For me at least all my 4 servers here at home are ALWAYS open ( no case cover ) and when i work with them i turn the AC

Yeah it is safe to take out. Delicately tho. Just unscrew it odd the heat sink, clean and put it back on. Computer MUST be unplugged to do this. If the computer fan making like a blender like or grater noise, get a new one. Laterz.

In that case the fan needs to be changed or the centre revolving base should be cleaned. That better work!

If I'm not mistaken you're referring to your CPU heat sink fan. Once they start getting loud, it usually means its time to replace it. They're cheap.
