I don't think anything but plastic surgery would actually get rid of stretch marks. There might be creams & such to use to maybe make the stretch marks a little more un-noticable but once you get them - their yours to keep. They will lighten up over the years and become almost unnoticeable but that's about it.

Vicki is right. Once you have stretch marks, they're there for life. You can reduce the appearance of them though, by preventing further damage.
Stretch marks happen because even though the skin is very elastic, there is a limit to how far it can stretch without damage, and still do the job of holding in your blood vessels and organs at the same time. So when your skin gets stretched further and faster than it can normally handle, your cell production goes into overdrive, and starts making new skin to thicken the over-stretched areas.
The problem is that this is the exact same process that forms scars over a wound, so the stretched places will resemble scars, and take the same kind of treatment to reduce their visibility. Creams are for prevention and maintenance, to increase the skin's natural elasticity. However, to reduce stretch marks' appearance for real requires a multi level approach. It takes protection from the sun, regeneration help, support, and dealing with hyperpigmentation (darkenning), hypopigmentation (lightenning), and busted blood vessels.
While you are experiencing a growth spurt, weight gain, or pregnancy, you should bathe and use lotion daily. Stay away from mineral oils, and opt for natural ones such as cocoa butter, shea butter, jojoba, almond...whichever suits you best. For both very fair skinned people who are sensitive to the sun, and darker skinned people with keloid skin, shea butter is best because it has some sun protective aspects, and for some unknown reason, is compatible with the chemicals normally used for SPF.
Weekly, do a 'peeling' treatment with a sugar, salt, loofah, or alpha hydroxy (fruit or sour milk acid). This pushes your skin into a more uniform regeneration process.
That was the prevention end.
If you've done all you can do and still get stretch marks, you can reduce their appearance by taking measures to protect your skin from sunlight, while at the same time keeping it moist, and preventing further stretching.
Exercise is crucial. You should try to reduce your stomach as close to its pre pregnancy or pre weight gain size as soon as possible. Starving and diets won't do this because they don't tone the muscles that support your organs, and they lead to vitamin defeciencies that make the skin's elasticity worse. So eat a balanced diet and exercise to tone your stomach area back up.
While you're at this, keep up the moisture and peeling regime. In the problem areas though, use silicone sheets. They are expensive, but if you get the separate sheets and adhesive, the sheets will be a one time buy. Cut them in the shape of your problem areas and wear them all the time except when you're bathing. It takes about 6 weeks to start seeing results on most people, but most also notice a softenning and smoothing of the skin within a week.
After you have used the sheets for 3 months, if you notice that there is still tenderness at the stretched points, or you have busted blood vessels that you can now see since the skin isn't folded or stretched, see a plastic surgeon about steroid injections.
It's not as dramatic as it sounds. They just give you some small shots in the areas where the skin is looking weird.
I hope that this helps. :-)

Stretch marks are not caused by being overweight, because skinny people can have equally as many. If you lose weight they will not disappear. Stretch marks are tiny tears in the dermis (second layer or skin) that are permanent scars and vary in color; they may fade, but will always remain.

Time, I had a baby two years ago and mine are almost gone, but now I am pregnant again! I put cocoa butter on mine, and they faded pretty well, also retin-a is said to be helpful. But there are risk if you are a lactating mother. Also anywhere I put cocoa butter on during my pregnancy didn't get stretch marks.

Everything I've read says that there is no way to get rid of 'em, unless you want to get laser surgery. I don't know how much it costs, or how many treatments you'd need, though. Creams and lotions don't work, though.
