The World Champion largest number, listed in the last Guinness Book of Records is an upper bound, derived by R. L. Graham, from a problem in a part of combinatorics called Ramsey theory.
Graham's number cannot be expressed using the conventional notation of powers, and powers of powers. If all the material in the universe were turned into pen and ink it would not be enough to write the number down. Consequently, this special notation, devised by Donald Knuth is necessary.

Pi is the longest number. Here's the very beginning of it. It has no ending. They have a super computer that's been running for years trying to find the end. No luck yet.

To answer your question about numbers ever ending. I don't see how that's possible. All you have to do is just add 1 more to the biggest number to make a bigger number.

Infinity isn't really a number though, it's a concept.
There are plenty of numbers that go on forever like 1/3 (which is .3333333 repeating) and 10^infinity... which I suppose you could call infinity...
I suppose you could give infinity a value with limits such as the limit as x--.infinity of 20^x... but that's a different way of writing essentially the same thing.
Since many numbers like pi, (1/3), and even one when represented by .9999 repeating forever are numbers that go on forever in decimals many numbers are the longest in the world. Pi is a little more interesting since there is no appearent pattern.

pi is the longest, not largest number known to man thus far. Does that help anyones brain wrap around it.
In theory, I believe that any word spoken or combination of letters is eventually actually the name of a number. (Infinity) would actually be a number so to speak.... as would the word "tree" if numbers go forever... then every different word you come up with eventually would have to be a number.... Just think about that for a while.

The answer is there is none.
Infinity is not a number, therefore infinity cannot possibly be the longest number.
Also, a number that exists can never reach infinity, value wise. Therefore, a number can continue to grow forever and ever and never reach infinity. Therefore, there can't exist a number that can be defined as a number that is the largest.

There are an infinite number of integers. Any number you find, there is always a bigger one.
Also, pi is NOT the only number whose decimal representation does not repeat in a pattern. ALL irrational numbers have this property! So in a way, all irrational numbers are infinite too.
Remember, irrational means the number cannot be expressed exactly in the form a/b for ANY a and b.

A google plex. A google is one followed by 100 zeros. A google plex is one followed by google zeros. I once heard it described as a number bigger than the number of atoms in the universe.
