Believe it or not the Oldsmobile Cutlass line was the top selling car in America in those days. Just click on the link below and scroll about halfway down until you see the 1970s-1980s.

A 1975 Corvette! A 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am!
A 1977 Chevy Nova! A 1978 Porsche 911!
A 1979 Honda Civic !

Does that answer your question.

The Nova and Camaro were extremely popular during that time. The Mustang being produced in that era was a Pinto derivative called the Mustang II, and it was a lemon.

Japanese cars were making inroads at that time. Toyota Celicas - while not as popular as they are now - were in demand then, as were Honda Accords.

Well unfortunately those years marked the worst of American cars and trucks. They were poorly built, underpowered and generally junk. There are still Camaros and Firebirds running around and from time to time a Chevy Caprice. By far I see more Chevy and Ford Trucks from those years.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler/Dodge all had popular cars, but to answer, I'd say the 2nd generation Pontiac Trans Am. Spefically, the one featured in the 1977 movie "Smokey and the Bandit".

ford sold a ton of escorts, chevy sold chevettes, those were kinda the dark days for the consumers but great for the manufacturers (in terms of corporate profits). i was in high school in those years and i remember customized vans were real big then also. i had a 77 ford e150...i called it the sin bin ;)
