You ask someone what music they like & they say "I like all music"?

I think it's such a cop-out answer.

Next time I hear that, I'll say- "Wow! Does that include Gregorian chants & Indonesian folk sings in your collection?"

NO one likes "All" music....

It really has come to the point today where in order to get a real answer, you have to make the question Very specific.

I guess since music is SO much more available today (the Net, stores, etc) people *would* tend to give the cop out reply....

yes. those people who say "i like everything by everybody!" are obviously not real music appreciaters. you gotta have some standards!

edit_ i really do believe that someone could really enjoy every 'category' of music. but the people who say what you said they say are usually people who listen to those top40s stations that brag about their 'variety" (we play pop! and hip-hop! and rap! and pop-rock!). they think that that is basically everything

What's the point? I hate the question. It is not as if learning about someone's musical tastes is going to provide you with any real insight into who they are or what kind of character they have. Sure the answer may be a cop out, but isn't the question a cop out as well? Isn't it just small talk bullshit under the guise of actual intrigue? How is "I like all music" any different from "I'm doing fine. How are you?"

Well I, for one, happen to like ALL music. Including the ones listed. I think that each type of music is a different way of expressing one's self.

Yeah, it's kind of irritating, but not as irritating as people who still listen to the same music they listened to in high school, and nothing else. Back to your question, it would be better if people gave preferences. For example, they could say "I like a lot of music, but I prefer rock and R&B."

I usually reply that I like a lot of music. I usually list what I don't like to make it easier. Sometimes I just say I like certain genres(I list my favourites), but that usually escalates into something about me apparently not liking hip hop or rap because I didn't list it, thus usually making me try to explain that while I do like rap, I don't like it near as much as I like post-rock.

It may be a cop out answer, but it's easier than listing out each genre of music you like.
