I have just started book one in the series, and about 100 pages through I am wanting to just put it back on the shelf. Does it get better? Does it begin to make sense?

Keep going. Once you're through the first one you will have a better feel for the language that he is using. I am a HUGE Stephen King fan, and even I had to try a couple of times before I got through "The Gunslinger". You might try the reworked version, it's a little easier to get through. After you finish this one, you will be hooked.

It is a very good series. The ending, at first, left a lot to be desired. However, after re-reading it again, I found that the ending was perfect for the series.

I highly recommend finishing all 7 books. It will take a long time, but it will be worth it.

I should ask. The version you are reading, is it the older one? Or is it the re-worked one he did a couple of years ago. If it's the older one, I suggest getting the newer instead. King himself said he liked the newer version better, and that he was a little too pompous and wordy back then.

oh man! I loved book one! I read the first three and half of the fourth one. Once I got to the fourth, I had to put it down. My dad however, feels the opposite. He loved the fourth and only somewhat enjoyed book one. He has read all seven now. If you're anything like him, I would say stick with it. I kind of wish I had. I might go back and pick it up again. I hope you enjoy the others more!
