Different people write music different ways... the only similarity is that they all worked at it and practiced it until they got good at it (although, some are better than others).
I usually will come up with a riff on my guitar/bass/piano and then work on it ,trying to figure out what would sound best coming after each part. Sometiimes this process comes quickly, sometimes it is very difficult (I have one song that is still not finished from 1990).
Whatever method you use (words first, melody first, instrumental first, etc) don't give up, and don't expect to be writing Grammy Award winners straight out of the box. Those guys have been writing for years. Also, don't think that a song has to be complicated to be good (my particular downfall). The Ramones wrote some of the simplest songs ever, and they are- most of them- classics.
I wish you the best of success in your writing career.

The weird thing for writing music for me is that I, personally, can't just sit down and write it in one sitting. I'll get all inspired by something stupid like a funny looking cloud or someone on the bus and I have to jot out a tune or some lyrics on a scrap of paper; then when I'm finally alone with my guitar in a quiet place I can start writing. Yes, it's a challenge, but I really enjoy it.

If you're talking about writing a score, you have to have a knowledge of music theory. You need to know how to transpose instruments --not everything is written in 'C' major.
Having said that, you CAN teach yourself if you have a basic musical knowledge. Try to get hold of a copy of 'The Professional Composer/Arranger' by Russell Garcia.
If you are a beginner, forget it !!

Some people go to school for this, you think it can be easy? If you want to write music, study first. I mean, if you really want to do great music.

Writing sheet music is.....well, I personally can't do t because I lack the knowledge of what means what.
That said, my friends who are in a band use software to make rough sheet music out of what they played.

It comes from the heart. If you have feelings and want to express them enough than it'll be fine. Keeping a good beat and putting the words to it are important too, but not nearly as important as the emotion you have to put into it.
