All wheel drive is on all the time. 4 wheel drive distributes power to the wheel that is needed.

generally "all wheel drive" is active all the time, and 4 wheel drive is switchable between 2 wheel and 4 wheel. Both are good in snow, the advantage of all wheel drive is that the driver doesn't have to activate it, whereas many 4 wheel drive systems require the driver to switch manually, and some older models require the front hubs to be locked and unlocked manually outside the vehicle

Nothing.. They work the same .. its the terminology..

AWD is used when referring to vehiclels that dont go off road (Sabaru Legacy, Any Audi.)

4WD is for vehicles that do go off road. The only diffrence is they have a low range gear for off roading. ( Jepp, Land Rover ) .
