I'm sixteen and I've been searching around for a decent job. What I'm unsure of is whether it would be more profitable to work at a store or at a restaurant. The jobs I'm considering at the moment are Marsh, Texas Roadhouse, Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Targer or Pucchini's. I like the restaurant atmosphere much more than a store's, but I'm not sure about the pay at restaurants. I know you work for tips, but do you actually get more working at a restaurant than at a store (I do live in a sort-of ritzy area, so I don't expect the tips to suck)? Also, other job suggestions are welcome. :)

If you like the restaurant scene, that would be a good first job. It strengthens your people skills, teaches you to deal with stress, etc.

You will always make more in a restaurant. Think of it this way if you only had 3 tables each hour and each gave you $5.00 you have made 15 an hour. Plus you don't have to pay a third of it in taxes like you would in retail. Retail is mind numbing repetitive work but in a restaurant there are different people and different things happening. Once you get good at it no matter where you are or what may happen in your life you can make some decent cash. Actually one thing that happens is that people get used to making lots of cash.

I'd definitely say the restaurant. How much you make depends on the type of restaurant and how popular it is, but it also depends on you and how good you are with the public. If you love talking with people and can listen to what they need and do it well you can make a lot more money in the restaurant. You also have to put up with a lot of jerks and bullies and still have a smile on your face, so be prepared for that.

Restaurants are really good especially with tips and stuff, but I would also suggest calling car dealerships and seeing if they need like receptionists or people to answer phones... people in my high school did this and get paid 10 dollars an hour which i thought was pretty good. if you live in a ritzy area I'm sure that'll help though too at a car dealership.
