First you need a Network Adapter. If you bought a slim PS2 then it is already installed in it. If not, then you need to buy one seperately, and it is very easy to install.
It looks something like this:

You can find one for $20.
You also need intenet access. The network adapter has a Dial-Up and Broadband connections in the back. Once installed just plug your internet cord it. The network adapter comes with a CD which you will need to run on your PS2. The CD is used to make an internet connection, set up and saved onto your PS2 memory card. Just let the PS2 automatically set up the PS2 to the interenet and your set.
When you put in a game, you will need to set up the connection to the game servers. Some games do it automatically, but some require it manually, but its not difficult. Also, if you have dial-up some games require Broadband connection only, but if you have Broadband already then there is no worries. PS2 Online is free, but some MMORPG game makers do charge, but 90% of PS2 online games are free.
