the easiest way to tell without going on for hours on how to check thru windows XP is to open one panel on the case of the PC, locate the harddrive. In the back of the harddrive there will be a power connector with red, yellow and black wires on it, then there will be another cable, IDE will either be 40 or 80 (usually grey) wires joined together and are about 3inches wide. SATA will have one small thin wire, about half an inch that joins to the harddrive to the motherboard.

SATA data cables are thin and their connectors are about 1/2 inch in length. ATA/PATA/IDE cables are bigger about 2 inches in length and have many wires on a wide ribbon cable.

Big flat grey or yellow cable with a red stripe on the side, white power plug - IDE

Thin red cable with power plug adaptor = SATA

you need "system information"
so you look where system information is found
¬v
Start\Programs\ Accessories\ System Information

here you see a dual window
on the left side is a 'tree-view' of your computer
and on the right-side pane
will be displayed the information you request
in this case from the tree-view

Okay the information you WANT relates to hardware
so, click hardware in the left pane
Your PC will wisen-up to the details you want
and display them in the the Right-Side Pane

et voila!
your req'd info
