Most of the box turtles in Arkansas are 'Three-toed box turtle', a near relative of the Eastern box turtle.

Wild box turtles eat mostly bugs- insects, worms, snails, arthropods, and even some carrion. They also eat a wide variety of plants and fungi.

In captivity, try:
- At least 50% 'bugs', and a little other low-fat meat (chicken, organ meats, etc,) You can also try hard-boiled eggs and shells, canned or dry high-quality pet food (in small quantities), etc.
- The rest in a mix of grasses, hays, mushrooms, dark leafy greens, yard plants, flowers, veggies, and fruits.
- A sprinkle of good reptile vitamins with B13 with each meal, and some calcium supplement per directions.
- VARIETY IS KING. Keep it healthy- low fat, low sugars, low-processing, etc, They also don't do citrus or milk well. Knowing these rules, you can even try SOME table scraps- a bit of peanut butter on wheat bread, some mashed potatoes and mixed veggies... BUT REMEMBER THE RATIO of protein to veggies.

Try feeding him cat can cat food. They like vegetables but dont leave the food in for long time it will wilt. in fact feed the turtle out side his regular place he lives then put him back in his home. Get a book on turtles or go to the library and read up on them. You need a lot of information to raise them. Also keep the living quarters clean as much as possible. Priscilla P.S. Be sure to wash your hands good after handling your turtle. They carry germs that can make you sick.

try all kinds of vegetables and fruit, he will decide which ones he likes, especially try tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelon, mushrooms, grated squash, any berry, chopped collards and
green leaf lettuce (do not use iceberg lettuce) canned dog food
(chicken based) hard boiled eggs, earthworms and grubs and snails, crickets
the things that trigger them to eat are color (they like red/orange food) smell and movement
Good Luck with your new pet
