I'm interested in learning how to play guitar. I'm really not familiar with the guitar terms and all that. Please suggest a good type of guitar I should start off with (bass etc.). I would also like to know good brands of guitars.

It's cool to be into rock, but an electric guitar isn't the best instrument for learning. Start with an acoustic guitar, 6 string, something in the $200 range, or a guitar that's been sitting in someone's attic for a while. It's all good for learning.

Learning on an acoustic 6 string will help you understand how all guitar music works -- what makes a chord, how the strings are tuned and manipulated.

From the acoustic, move to an electric or to an electric bass. It'll make you a smarter musician and a better band member to know what you're doing.

Congrats on joining the family.
Go to your nearest guitar shop and talk to the first person that says "hello". Tell them that you are looking to start playing, and don't know what to buy. Ask to see the starter packs they have in stock. The starter packs have a guitar, an amp, a set of strings, a strap, a cord, and a few picks.
There are several companies that make starter packs, including Fender, Ibanez, BC Rich, and a few others. The guy at the shop should be able to point you in the right direction.
You can pick up a few guitars until you find the one that feels besst in your hands... then ask if that company has starter packs.

If you spend a fortune on a Gibson or a Fender, it's not going to make the learning process any easier. Buy a Korean/Chinese 'Squire' copy of a Tele or Strat, then you will have some spare dosh to spend on a few lessons.
If you decide that you don't actually want to be a guitar player after a few weeks, then you haven't lost an insane amount of loot.

Don't start with the bass. Get a decent, brand-name gutiar for a few hundred bucks. Test drive a few models at the music store and see what feels and sounds best in your hands. You can start with acoustic or electric, but definitely start with a six-string. It also depends of course, on what type of music you want to play. If you're going to play ballads, country, or gospel, you'll probably get more for your money with an acoustic. If you're into rock, well, I'm not sure how "Highway to Hell" would sound unplugged!

The best thing to do is go into a music store, ask a few questions, and play with some of the guitars to see which you like to play the most.

well if you want to start with acoustic then get a yamaha they are great for starting guitars. if you want an electric than get an epiphone les paul or an epiphone SG those are both cheap rock guitars. some good names for electric
the king of rock guitars Gibson (epiphone is licenced by Gibson), Ibanez, BC Rich or you could get a wimpy jazz Fender or squire (i hate fender!!!)
for acoustic
and you want an amp if you get an electric so get a peavy, or a marshall. (marshalls rock!)
Yamaha
Martin
dont really know any more im more into electrics
