what do you think? should a 13 yr old girl need a cell phone? she doesn't go out much but loves to hang out with friends and go shopping....i dont know and hoping to hear from you...

I do not think that a cell phone is a necessity for a 13 year old. You already said that she doesn't go too many places, but likes hanging out with her friends. I'm sure she wants a cell phone just to show off to her friends and/or to fit in with her friends. Payphones are still around and there is a 90% chance that her other friends are going to have a cell phone. At 13, she shouldn't be going anywhere alone, so she won't have to worry about getting lost and calling for help.
I do think that if you are going to get a cell phone, which most parents get for their kids when they are about that age, you should definately start with a prepaid service. At 13, your child (or niece or cousin or what have you) will not have a sense of how money really works when Mom or Dad or Auntie is spending it for them. If you insist on getting them a postpaid service, I would go Disney Mobile. They actually are the only company that I am aware of that sets up time limitations on using the phones, numbers that can be called and parental guards for text messaging and internet access. The charge is comparable to major wireless brands, but actually focuses on the child and the parent that has to pay the bill every month, which is great. It depends. I got a cell at 13 because I was away from home alot, at band practices and such. If the school has access to phones, and she doesn't often leave the house, i'd say no.

I think everyone needs a cell these days. You never know when someone needs you. They are very practical in todays busy and fast paced world.

Yeah, she can use it to keep in touch with friends and use it to call you or a family member in a emergency. That is why i go one, in case of emergency, never had one, but you never know. I say go for it.

I think if your her mother or aunt or whatever relationship you have to her,get her one.Why?Because there convienent and everyone has one.If you dont think your ready to get a contract,get her a prepaid phone.Try these links at the bottom.

She doesn't need it but could be comforting to you when calling her knowing where she is and who she's with; provided she doesn't tell fibs.
