Ok we are talking about the Primary Cam chain tensioner - ok guys I posted this question over two hours ago - what's up - need some good answers here

Any noise from the cam side is a good indication of problems have seen some with 5000, miles just did one with 75,000 miles when the shoe starts to come apart it is time, or you see the chain is wearing into the shoe, better safe than taking out valves or the top of the piston. don't forget cam bearings and think about gear drive.

On the primary cover, between the bulge for the engine sprocket (in front) and the derby cover (over clutch basket) should be an inspection cover (round or oval).
Remove cover and insert finger, test free play (up and down) of chain. Adjust per manual specs.

when the spring breaks or when the orange plastic part is worn threw. the local dealership said that they wear quickly at first ~1/8in then they slow down. they lasted 50k on my '99 RK
