I "personally" am very offended when someone uses an X it is like taking Christ out of Christmas.
And I know allot of people say Christ has nothing to do with Christmas but HE is the reason I celebrate it.

It is not offensive or derogatory, regardless of what others may think. I was actually told by a very conservative Christian pastor that it is not offensive in the least if you know anything at all about the Greek language. X in Greek is Christos which is where the title Christ comes from. So Xmas is the exact same thing as Christmas. How anyone could be offended by that, I have no idea, unless they are truly uneducated on the origin of the word. In which case, it would do them and everyone else a huge service to become educated on it. Either way, it is not their place to complain about it.

I had fun telling my students this just two years ago. Either way, you can't leave Christ out of Christmas. You see, the Greek letter that looks like an X also was a symbol for the name of Christ, like what was found in an ichthus. So, really, when you write X-mas, it's still evidence for Christ being in Christmas.

I guess if you wanted to leave Jesus out of it altogether, you'd be kind of stuck. Even Happy Holidays has Him in it. Because that is derived from Happy Holy-Days.

It's kind of fun to get behind the history of words, you know?

I've heard X is the Greek representation for Christ, although I'm not sure. Thus it is just as valid to say Xmas as it is to say Christmas instead of Jesusmas. Just a thought.

I don't see a problem with it at all. I think some Christians spend far too much time looking for things to be offended about--especially since the protest over "Xmas" is rooted in their own ignorance of what it means.

No, I do not think it is wrong. In fact many Christians interpret Xmas as the X meaning Christian. Others who are not Christian may use the term Xmas and mean it as ExMas. Like it is a secular celebration with out the Christ aspect.

By saying Xmas instead of Christmas you take out Christ and He's the whole reason for it. We celebrate Christmas because Jesus Christ, our Savior, was born and replacing his name with anything else is just wrong.

I believe the whole Christmas thing is wrong...a time to stress out over gifts that people can't afford on a day that is suppose to be about Jesus but very RARELY is - what difference does it make they all have pagan origin...and was at one time even banned in Europe and American colonies in the 17th century - but has been gradually allowed in.

Check the New Encyclopedia Britannica.

I never thought of it but you are right. It is wrong to put x-mas instead of Christmas.(Christ)mas is about Christ who gave up his life for us.I don't know why,but people probably say it to make it short. How would those people like it IF they had holiday of their own and people changed to another name without discussing it with the owner.X is a drug.A bad drug at that.It is not a name that should be in place of Jesus,Christ,or God.That is all I have to say.MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

It is Christmas....not Xmas. I am not the most religious of persons but it is what it is. Celebration of the birth of Jesus. To me the "X" is very demeaning.
