Cal State is actually a 4 year university that hands out bachelor's degrees, where community colleges only offer associate's degrees which are worthless. Going to a community college, does however, give you an opportunity to transfer to a better school, possibly a private school, but probably a UC or Cal State school. Depending on what community college you plan on attending, some have very low transfer rates. In some schools, fewer than 20% of the students go on to a Cal State or UC. Some community colleges, like SMCC(Santa Monica CC) for example has a great program that will get you into UCLA if that is your choice. At the very least, you will be saving two years of tuition by finishing some of your undergrad work at a community college. You will definitely miss out on some college experiences though because community colleges are mostly commuter schools with practically non-existant campus life. In my opinion, going to college is about more than taking classes and getting a degree. It all depends what your reasons are for going to a community college, but unless you plan on busting your @ss and transferring to a better school than the Cal-State school you are declining to go to, or you're doing it to save money, I think going to a Cal-State would be a smarter choice. I'm sure the only reason your boyfriend is mad at you is because he is unable to express to you that academically, the majority of people at four year schools are more serious than people at the community colleges. So he is probably confused as to why you are selling yourself short, and it comes out as anger. Not all people at community college are slackers. There are many serious students. Unfortunately they are in the minority. You'll be fine no matter what you choose.

The reason is the very best 4 year schools like Cal-tech and MIT give an education vastly superior to any CC. And getting into those schools from a CC, while not impossible, is so close to it it may as well be (lees than 1% chance at some schools). Bottom line here is if you are an elite student (say over a 3.5 GPA in rigorous ans challenging subjects such as calculus) then by all means go to a 4 year school directly. If not then you are unlikely to get the marks to be able to get into a 4 year school that will give you a better education than a CC, so you may as well save money by doing that. If you are a good, but not elite student (GPA > 3) then either option has merit and really depends on personnel preference. Either option will make zero difference in the long run. I have recently been reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. There you will discover what really determines success. It is not going to a 'trophy' schools like Harvard, it is going to good schools of which Harvard is only one example. The difference in their output of highly successful people is zero. And many of those good schools are assessable from a CC eg Rose Hullman or NJIT. Thanks Bill

Why are you going to community college and what do you plan to do there?

If you are going to do your first two years there and then transfer to somewhere else to finish your four year degree because you need to save money on tuition or living expenses, that seems like a good decision.

If you have career plans that you can do in a community college program, like medical assisting, that may be a good decision. There are some respectable career options that you can train for in community college, but your long term career will be more limited than if you had a four year degree. You boyfriend may think you are capable of doing more.

If you are going to community college because you just don't want to leave your partying high school friends or move out of mom and dad's house to start taking care of yourself, or because you are chickening out of facing the potentially tougher challenge of a four year college, I probably would be disappointed in your choice. (Of course, if you honestly know you're not emotionally mature enough to be on your own and you're serious about using community college as a transition time to grow up and become serious about your studies and your life, then it's a good idea).

Well it depends on the situation. Are you going to the community college because its cheaper? Closer to home? It also depends on what you are majoring in and how far you are towards that major. But if you can go to Cal State and not have to worry about the expense or work then yes i would be mad.

There is allot of ifs and buts. Example if you just want to get some pre reqs. out of the way and you want to save some money then community college would be best idea.

I think you get my drift.

Depends on your reasons. If you are going to the CC only because it seems like it's easier, then that's kind of lame. If it's financial issues or other issues that make it extremely difficult or impossible to got to Cal State, then that may be understandable. What is your long term plan -- do you hope to transfer to a UC from the CC system? Lots of facts that may change my perception. Obviously, you have to choose what is best for you. But remember, higher education is an investment in our future (a worthy one) and you should strive to get the best one that you can get into and afford. Good luck!

Make sure you talk to an adviser from Cal State, or what 4 yr university you plan on going to after CC and make sure that the courses from the CC will transfer. Some 4 yr Universities are really picky on what they will let you transfer in. More than likely classes directly pertaining to your degree will not transfer. Example.....history classes from CC will usually not transfer to University if your a history major.

You're bf is dumb, I'm sorry. Community College is a great option to obtain your GE coursework and 2 year degree if you so desire - and it is very affordable! Maybe his parents paid his way through college, but some of us are not that lucky. Go for it, and tell him to mind his own business.

You might miss the social aspect of a 4 year, but you can still get that in years 3 & 4. Don't let him burst your bubble.

If your bf gets mad don't let that make you change your plans. Do whatever you want and if you think you are comfortable with attending a community college go for it. Never let other people decide for you! Good Luck!

Maybe she wants to slow down and relax. Besides sometimes community colleges have a few great instructors, perhaps thats the case in her field study. Or maybe she feels the need to stay close to home,....ask her
